Medical Alarms

Help at the press of a button

It’s a proven fact that Americans are living longer than ever, largely because of advances in medical technology. However, new challenges and problems now face the elderly as a result. While it’s true that they are living longer, the quality of life in those later years may not be as good as they had hoped for. For this reason, medical alarm systems have become quite popular for the senior who lives alone. Medical alarms offer constant protection to the senior, and they can be worn anywhere. They are also waterproof, which is important because many seniors sustain slips and falls while showering or bathing.

What is a medical alarm?

Medical alarm systems can not only help a senior in times of trouble, but they can very often save a life. These systems are small and are worn around the neck, similar to a necklace. In the event of an emergency, the senior can press the button and signal for help. Depending on the nature of the emergency, paramedics or maybe even a nearby neighbor can arrive to help. These medical systems work very well for falls, heart attacks, stroke and even fainting. While the senior might not be able to signal for help due to a loss of consciousness, many medical alarms can be activated automatically in the event that an accident occurs. Many models are even equipped to monitor extreme hot or cold temperatures.

How do medical alarms work?

Medical alarm systems are increasing in popularity because they give seniors the chance to live independently without having to compromise their safety. The alarms rely on a working phone system. Each emergency does not always require the assistance of paramedics. At the time of set up, the senior will provide emergency contact numbers which may very well be contacted, depending on the nature of the emergency. If the alarm is triggered and the response center calls back and receives no answer, they will immediately send paramedics. Two-way communication between the senior and the response center is also available.

Some medical alarm systems are advanced enough that they can monitor breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. Other advanced features can remind seniors to take their medicine. Medical alarms offer a sense of freedom and peace of mind, not only to the senior but also to the family that loves and cares for them. No senior should be without one of these systems if they live alone.
