Avoid slippery situations with a transfer bench

Transfer benches are mobility aids that make it easier for the elderly or handicapped person to get into the bathtub or shower. Half of the device sits outside the tub, and the other inside. The user then slides across into the tub section of the device. This enables people to bathe and shower who normally could not make it over the wall of the tub.

Bathtub transfer benches are available in sliding and non-sliding models. With the sliding transfer benches, the user does not have to move; rather, the seat itself moves. With the non-sliding transfer bench, the user sits on one side and scoots over to the other.

A basic transfer bench typically consists of a back, long seat and four legs. There are many different kinds, customized for the patient’s needs. The size, height and width can all vary. Various optional accessories are available, such as a padded seat, commode opening or swing arms.

Both transfer bench styles offer the user the ability to sit while showering. Another option would be to use a shower stool, which does not facilitate transfer in and out of the tub. Shower stools are set inside (or built inside) the tub or shower, and once inside the tub, the user can sit to shower. Shower stools are for people who have a difficult time standing for long periods of time. In fact, many new showers that are installed have shower stools included.

Which transfer bench do you need?

Which device is needed depends on the condition of the user. While transfer benches are really both products in one, it may not be necessary for a particular user. Both are wonderful helps to the elderly and people with disabilities. Most are made with sturdy materials and are made to last quite a while. If you are looking online for transfer benches or shower stools just make sure they are quality material. Shoddy workmanship or inferior materials defeat the purpose of the device, which is safety. Be sure to check carefully; your health, or that of a loved one, may depend on it. For the most part, however, most products available are of good workmanship and quality.
