Walkers
Which kind of walker is right for you?
People suffering from limited mobility often rely on family members to get around. Walkers and other mobility aids can help them to gain a measure of independence.
When it comes to finding the right walker, it is important to do your research. There are two main types of medical walkers available, and your choice will depend on your budget and your mobility needs.
- Standard walkers: These walkers are cheaper and more compact. They are available in folding models that are easy to transport and store. Standard walkers also provide a higher level of support.
- Wheeled walkers: These are often called rolling walkers or rollators. They come in three-wheeled and four-wheeled models. Wheeled walkers are bulky and considerably more expensive than standard walkers. The wheels make walking smoother and easier, but the user needs more strength to ensure the walker doesn’t roll away.
No matter which type of walker you choose, however, there are some basic considerations to keep in mind:
- You want to make sure that you choose a sturdy mobility aid that is made of a strong metal. It is important to check the maximum weight capacity of the specific product you choose, to be sure it will support you properly.
- Also check the height of the walker. A walker that is too low is bad for your posture. Many walkers have adjustable heights. You can also have a medical walker custom-made to ensure a perfect fit.
- Another consideration is the handgrips of your walker. These are usually molded plastic or foam rubber, and may or may not be adjustable. Pick grips that you are completely comfortable with. Many times people will realize later that their grips aren’t sufficient, so it is best to keep this is mind while shopping.
- You should also consider the flooring in your home. If using a rolling walker, make sure that the wheels will be able to roll smoothly over any surfaces in your home. Some wheels will not function properly over carpet and other materials. You will also want to make sure that your wheels will not scratch or mark your floor. Some wheels are made for outdoor use, so think about where you will be utilizing your walker most.
- Many walkers come with extra features and accessories. For instance, some of these mobility aids come with built-in seats. Others have baskets for storage. These can be great for people who are unable to stand for long periods of time, even with the walker, or for people who use their walkers for shopping.
Walkers are a fantastic aid that can give a person with limited mobility the ability to get around on his or her own. With so many options to choose from, it is best to consult with a physician or home health care professional before making a final decision.
