Nursing Homes

What you need to know about nursing homes

There are many things to consider when it comes to selecting residential nursing homes for a loved one.

Keep in mind that the cost of nursing home care can be extremely high, and about half of nursing home residents pay these costs out of their own savings. Under certain circumstances, Medicare or Medicaid will cover some nursing home costs. If you are hoping to qualify for these benefits, be sure to choose a nursing home that is certified by your state to receive these payments.

One of the best things you can do to begin your search is to find an agency that will give you resources for all of the nursing homes in your city. While these agencies will not usually make recommendations, they may provide you with some basic information about local long term care facilities that will allow you to begin your search.

The next thing that you should do is search locally. Start with the homes for the aged that are closest to where you live. You will not want to drive for hours for regular visits, and it is also better for the person adjusting to their new place of residence.

Once you have a list of possible nursing homes, go to visit them without making appointments beforehand. Just show up and politely ask to be shown around. This will allow you to see the home in its normal condition.

Get a feel for the overall cleanliness of the facility by checking their public washrooms and other public places. Another good way to evaluate ¬nursing home standards is by checking out their kitchens. Be sure the quality of the food and cleanliness of the preparation meet your approval – your loved one will have to eat most of their meals here.

Perhaps the best way to determine the quality of nursing home care is to speak with the residents of the home. They will be able to give you good insider information about the inner workings of the home. They might reveal problems to you that you may have otherwise never known.

One thing that is an absolute must when searching for homes for the aged is making sure they are completely certified. These nursing homes must have routine inspections of their residences and facilities. They should be able to provide you with documentation showing that they are completely up to code according to your local laws. This is the best way to ensure that the staff you are dealing with are trustworthy as most of these facilities must undergo quite rigorous inspections.
