Dancing

You're never to old to take up dancing

Dancing is a great way to stay in shape and remain active in one’s later years. There are a number of different styles, from salsa dancing for those who are active to ballroom dancing for senior citizens who have to move a bit slower. Whatever your level of fitness, dancing is a fun activity that can be enjoyed with family or friends at any occasion.

Because of the variety of movements involved, dancing is also great exercise. All aspects of the body are required to work, with arms, legs and torso often moving in several different directions in the same movement. Many difficult dance positions also stretch the muscles, increasing the body’s overall flexibility.

While many people become self-conscious when dancing, it usually doesn’t matter if you can dance well or not. Most of the time, everyone is just there to have a good time. Of course, there are always dancing lessons available if you wish to improve your technique or learn a new style. There are many types of dances you can learn, including line dancing, ballroom dancing and salsa dancing. Dance lessons are also a good place to meet new people who share similar interests, which is often difficult for seniors with limited transportation.

Dancing Lessons

You can find dancing lessons in almost any senior or community center, as well as at private dance academies. While it is preferable to join a dance class specifically for seniors, any low-impact style of dancing will be fine. If you cannot find a group lesson that is suitable, most instructors are also available for private dancing lessons either at your home or in their studio. Seniors who live in assisted living or rehabilitation facilities may be able to pool their funds and persuade an instructor to visit the home for a series of private or semi-private lessons with the patients.

Group dancing lessons are often the best for seniors because they place people in the same age range together. It can be intimidating for some senior citizens to learn to dance with quicker, more able-bodied people in the same class. Grouping people by age or ability level leads them to encourage each other and help each other with difficult dance steps. Everyone will be on the same level and can progress to more difficult dances such as salsa dancing when the entire group is ready. No matter what level of fitness or dancing skill, the right dancing lessons can give you confidence and help you stay in shape.
