Speed Dating

Is speed dating right for you?

There are many seniors who would love to go out and have some fun. Seniors today are spunky and want to enjoy life to the fullest, and just like the younger generation, seniors want to share in this fun with a mate. However, most seniors aren’t hip to much of what the Internet has to offer, as that wasn’t really their era; and if they are computer savvy, many don’t trust Internet dating sites. Many would love to find someone but simply don’t know where to accomplish that goal. There are over 80 million senior citizens in the U.S. alone, and of that number, over one-third are single. That’s a whole new dating segment to reach.

What is Speed Dating?

To keep up with the growing demands of dating, speed dating has arrived a newer option and it’s become quite popular! In speed dating, a group of people meet up in a specific area such as a cafe or something similar. Everyone wears a nametag and carries a scorecard. Geared up with the best their personalities have to offer and a big smile, couples are paired together for only seven minutes; it’s almost like a game of musical chairs.

During this short and speedy time they can talk about anything except what they do for a living and where they live. After seven minutes, the interview is over and it’s on to the next potential date. So you don’t forget everyone, you keep the score card handy and write down the name of the person you just spoke with and a note (to keep for yourself) about what you thought about that person; could they be a potential interest or not? If at the end of the evening there are any matches (meaning both parties noted that they had a connection), they will exchange phone numbers.

Origins of Speed Dating

Who could have thought of such a thing? You might be surprised at the answer: it was a Jewish rabbi, Yaacov Deyo. His intention behind this type of dating system was based on his own traditions, and was designed for young Jewish singles. It then caught on in the Christian communities and then to the secular world. Speed dating events can be set up by a speed dating service, or you may be able to catch some information online. Assuming that you only wanted to date someone of the Christian faith or Jewish faith, then you would obviously only attend an event that was made up of these groups of people.

For many, this is a great alternative to the bar scene and those blind dates that your friends try to set you up with. This alternative is a fun, no-pressure way to get to know people quickly and remember – first impressions can mean everything.
