Sexual Health
Sexual health concerns for the Boomer generation
Having an active sex life is healthy, and proper knowledge about sexual health is a must no matter what age we are. A lot of the time, our sex drive will begin to slow down as we start to get age, but it can also remain quite constant even during our retirement years and beyond.
An active sex life past the age of 50 has many advantages for both mens sexual health and womens sexual health:
- During sex, the brain releases natural chemicals that help to reduce anxiety and result in your body burning fat.
- The growth of hormones and testosterone helps to strengthen muscles and bones, and sex helps to stimulate this process.
- Many studies have suggested that sex can slow aging. They say that people who have active sex lives tend to have fewer wrinkles around their eyes and on their face.
- The type of workout that your body goes through during sex is equivalent to walking up two flights of steps.
- Perhaps the most important reason to continue an active sex life as you age is so that you can continue an active sex life. People who are having sex produce more sexual hormones. This allows them to maintain their sex lives for a lot longer than someone who slows down or stops all together.
- Sex has also been proven to stimulate substances that increase the strength of the immune system.
Some seniors encounter problems in their sexual life, such as erectile dysfunction or female sexual dysfunction. These may be caused by:
- Anxiety
- Emphysema
- Lack of confidence
- Obesity
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Heart disease
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Over-drinking
- Certain prescription drugs
Consult your doctor or medical health professional for treatment and advice. For problems such as erectile dysfunction, medications or other products may be prescribed. Your doctor may also suggest lifestyle changes or counseling.
