Discount Hotels

The pros and cons of discount hotels

You’re retired and you finally have the chance to travel, but you’re not sure you can afford it on your retirement income. Sound familiar? Travel doesn’t need to be expensive if you’re willing to sacrifice a few frills. Many discount hotels offer quality lodging at affordable rates.

The first thing that you have to do is decide exactly what you are looking for in a hotel. What amenities can you live without, and what is crucial to an enjoyable vacation? If you plan to spend your time out seeing the sights, your hotel only needs to provide a decent bed and a shower. Look for small discount hotels that provide only the basics.

Meals can often be found cheaper (and better) outside of the hotel. Research your destination ahead of time and choose a hotel that is close to casual restaurants. You may not want to walk for your breakfast, though. Some cheap hotels include a continental breakfast with the room.

If you plan to spend a fair bit of time at the hotel, decide what facilities are most worth the extra money. Do you want cable TV? A pool? A bar? Make a list and then find a hotel that offers only those things, so you are not wasting money on amenities you won’t use.

Many companies offer package deals combining discount accommodations and airfare. With some savvy shopping, however, you may be able to save more money by booking discount air travel or discount train travel separately from your hotel.

It’s all just a matter of doing your research. For example, many car companies offer great package deals, advertising a free night at partner hotel for booking your rental car with them. You can then book the remainder of your trip with the same hotel. This is a great way to get a free night’s stay, and for the most part these companies partner with reputable discount hotels. If you are going to need a rental car to get around anyway, this is an option to consider.

Finally, don’t forget that many hotels and other travel companies offer senior travel discounts. Ask at the hotel of your choice to see if they have a seniors’ rate. You may be able to afford more than you thought.
